Abstract: La legislación para la educación en medios en Austria es el comienzo de este trabajo que encuadra la ley en un contexto pedagógico con características dominantes de conceptos como emancipación y ense anza liberadora. La educación en medios se utiliza en un sentido holístico, abarcando tanto los medios tradicionales de comunicación como los nuevos medios, incluyendo Internet. Las claves principales que se plantean son la reflexión crítica y la responsabilidad creativa individual y social, así como el papel del usuario de los medios como ciudadano autónomo. Defiende la educación en medios como una práctica interdisciplinar y presenta un portal educativo, www.mediamanual.at, que ha sido experimentado como una opción de oferta amplia de materiales en línea para apoyar a los profesores en el desarrollo de su educación en medios. This paper focuses on the presentation of the Laws for Media Education, which is the legal basis for the implementation of media education in Austria. The law is embedded into a pedagogical context, whose key characteristics are those of an emancipated, liberating concept of education indebted to ideas of the Enlightenment. Media education is used in a holistic sense, encompassing both the so-called traditional media as well as the new media including the Internet. The major areas are critical reflection and creative potential, individual and social responsibility. The ultimate goal is the autonomous media user as an autonomous citizen. As media education is an interdisciplinary practise, a wide choice of materials both in print and online has been developed to support the teachers: part of the paper is particularly devoted to the beginning and growth of the media education website www.mediamanual.at

Abstract: Wage setting methodologies for university faculty may be merit/market based or administered. Failure to exploit the fact that faculty productivity depends on abilities and wages results in inefficient use of university budgets. If such inefficiencies exist it suggests suboptimal productivity of the existing faculty and the inability to attract new qualified faculty. As motivation for this analysis, a simple model of university faculty “output” maximization is presented. Efficient budget allocation requires that faculty compensation be structured so that marginal productivities are equated across faculty. This paper examines and compares the efficiency of several regional universities in the US, identified as “peers”, employing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) estimation method. The results suggest the existence of inefficiencies and more notably, that the homogeneity assumption regarding the peers is questionable.

Abstract: This study reports on the learner impact, practicability and cost effectiveness of an individual practical skills test designed to assess the interpretative and manipulative skills of undergraduate pharmacy in a laboratory setting. The reliability of the assessment tool across a 5 year period was examined and refinements introduced in response to constructive feedback from colleagues and learner feedback recorded via end of year Student Evaluation Questionnaires. A blended learning strategy supported the needs of multiple learning styles and inclusion of a formative assessment increased student confidence and improved cohort performance in the summative assessment. Future directions include the introduction of a peer learning activity as a means of reducing group sizes and providing an opportunity for the learners to develop skills in constructive critique and reflective learning.

Abstract:

In this article a model of consumer behavior will be developed, based on preferences on the price space reflecting the individual’s willingness to pay for certain quantities of commodities under the supposition that the individual is restricted to his or her income. Firms offer certain amounts of commodities at the market and consumers react to these offers by their willingness to pay. Existence and continuity of the inverse demand function describing consumer’s behavior under appropriate conditions will be shown. Furthermore, differences between a model of consumer behavior based on preferences on the commodity space and that which is based on preferences on the price space will be pointed out.

Abstract: I analyze four frames deployed by members of United States Congress on the floor of the House of Representatives before the initial passage of the Affordable Care Act on November 7, 2009. Of the four frames—need, rights, deservingness, and entitlement—need was by far the most commonly used frame in the debate followed by rights, deservingness, and entitlement. I conclude that while Congress may broadly agree that Americans need and even deserve health care, it provided no right or entitlement to care under the Affordable Care Act.
Evidence-Based Use of Antibiotics in Veal Calves with Diarrhea  [PDF]

Abstract: Diarrhea is the leading cause of mortality in beef and dairy calves during the first week of life and results in substantial financial loss [1]. Diarrhea is a multifactorial disease and can be infectious or non-infectious. However, in the majority of calves, infectious organisms, especially Cryptosporidium parvum, rotavirus, coronavirus, and E. coli, are the primary cause [2]. The aim of this study was to generate a decision tree, based on prevalence, diagnostic testing and treatment and to estimate associated costs or risk. For each of the four main pathogens, two principal approaches are outlined and compared. The first approach relies on a detailed diagnostic workup and allows for specific etiological treatment. The second approach relies on the trial-and-error method, which involves the use of a first-choice antibiotic, followed by a second- and third-choice antibiotic if the previous ones failed to resolve the disease. In Switzerland, the prevalence of diarrheic calves infected with E. coli is approximately 1% suggesting that the use of antimicrobials for the treatment of scouring calves, in the absence of a diagnostic workup, is not always justified. However, for all four major pathogens, the trial-and-error method affords cheaper treatment compared with treatment based on an etiological diagnosis. This creates a quandary in view of the current worldwide efforts to reduce the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.

Abstract: The book is part of the Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Series which was developed with the publisher and the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. Andrew Knight is a Fellow of the latter. The Centre “aims to demonstrate rigorous intellectual enquiry and the highest standard of scholarship” (p. xv), and the series aims to satisfy the growing appetite for literature in the field. Knight presents a wealth of data on the issue of costs and benefits associated with animal experiments and the book goes beyond its title: it also imparts some information on alternatives. As the author states in the introduction, it represents an extension of his own published work.
